Cannavaro, McBride to Play in #Soccer Testimonial Match

Paul Scholes of Manchester United decided to assemble a testimonial match to take place on August 5th and the New York Cosmos obliged with Eric Cantona, another form United player, now directing soccer operations.  Scholes, a decorated United player, scored 102 goals before announcing his retirement in May.  The United squad will take on a new York Cosmos teams resuming operations after a 25-year hiatus with a lineup highlighted by Fabian Cannavaro, a former FIFA player of the year.

For American soccer fans, the highlight may be Brian McBride on the pitch again.  The former Fulham player paved the way for American players to cross the pond and find spots on European teams.  Fulham even named a bar at Craven Cottage after him. Anyone remember this goal against West Ham?

Fellow former Premier League players like Sol Campbell and Robbie Keane are scheduled to play for the Cosmos with the remainder of the club being from the team’s under-23 squad.

The match takes place two days before the 2011 Community Shield.
